Gov Makinde Under Fire

Oyo State chapter of Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) and Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the action of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State over his appearance at the recent June 12 protest in Ibadan and ‘protesting against Buhari’ government.

Empiregist reports that some youths and other angry Nigerians had on Saturday protested against bad governance and insecurity in Ibadan.

Makinde also joined the protesters to address them.

SPN said that Makinde’s appearance at the protest was mischievous.

The party noted that Makinde was not genuinely part of the protest.

The party in a statement signed by its Secretary, Comrade Ayodeji Adigun commended the protesters on their determination to carry on with the protest despite what the party described as “distraction created by the Governor.”

The party in the statement on Monday, described as mischievous and deceptive the sudden appearance of Makinde and his aides at the protest organised by hundreds of youths and workers.

The party said that it was unfortunate that Makinde had continued to remain indifferent to the plight of thousands of youths who are often used as casual workers under a terribly precarious and slavery working conditions in some private companies in the State.

The party noted that the appearance of the Governor was meant to create a false impression that the PDP-led government in the State is not a part of the failure over insecurity and economic crisis that Nigeria is witnessing.

“It is our belief in SPN that the Governor’s appearance at the protest was never genuine or conceived to identify with the protest and its demands as insinuated in some media reports.

“Rather it was meant to create a false impression that the PDP-led government in the state, premised on the same anti-poor profit first philosophy and agenda as Buhari/APC -led federal government is not a part of the failure over insecurity and economic crisis that were the basis of the protest.

“It was also a game plan to detract from the objective of the protest by simply using money to toy with the beggarly economic condition of the protesting workers and youths.

“Unfortunately, the dubious game plan was obviously affirmed by the open fight that broke out among some protesters while struggling to share the needless and unsolicited money given by the Governor.

“SPN frown against the usual traditional of the Engr Seyi Makinde-led government of using money to take advantage of the condition of misery faced by most youths in the state.

“No wonder the government has continued to remain indifferent to the plight of thousands of youths who are often used as casual workers under a terribly precarious and slavery working conditions across some private companies in Oyo State like SUMAL FOOD LIMITED, NIGERIA EAGLES FLOUR MILLS LIMITED, ZARTECH FOOD LIMITED among others.

“This is besides the cost of education which continues to be unavoidable for many youths in the State despite the recently announced 25% cosmetic reduction of unstipulated amount of payable fees in certain Institutions like LAUTECH. Therefore, as far as we are concerned in SPN such a government cannot be said to be pro- youths in anyway,” he stated.

Also, Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) knocked Gov. Seyi Makinde for joining the June 12 protest in Ibadan.

The organisation also blasted the South West for joining the June 12 protests against President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

MURIC frowned at the protests, referring to the protesters as certificated ingrates, rebellious subjects and articulated enemies of peace.

MURIC argued that the protesters have no moral ground to protest on June 12 since it was President Muhammadu Buhari alone who gave official recognition to that day when all past rulers had refused to do so.

MURIC said the most shameful, most reprehensible and most preposterous was the open participation of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State who marched on the streets of Ibadan with protesters chanting ‘Buhari Must Go’.

“It is most naive for a sitting executive governor who came into office riding on the back of democracy to join a group seeking the removal of a democratically elected president through undemocratic means. It was a great disservice to the memory of M.K.O. Abiola. Seyi Makinde is an ingrate nulli secundus. He should apologise to Nigerians for his immature behaviour.” MURIC said in a statement released by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola on Monday.

It’s observed that the foremost Federal College of Education stationed in Ondo, was upgraded to a University at the beginning of the year 2022, but there have been expectations among staff and the college Community that the government should have appointed a VC for the institution, to authenticate the new status.

The staff members opined that the speculations around as made it compelling for them to engage in such demonstration to make the stand of the staff members known.

Their earnest expectation remains that the federal government meets up their appeal by appointing a Vice Chancellor.

The herdsmen got angry and intended to attack the bus driver and conductor but ended up killing an onlooker. Benjamin in his statement debunked claims that the deceased ran to the police station for protection but was turned back.

”A commercial vehicle ran into two cows this morning at Agemowo, Badagry, killing one of the cows. The two cattle herders attacked someone they mistook for the vehicle conductor, resulting in his death. Angry residents blocked the highway in protest of the killing.

The DPO, Morogbo Division, assisted by soldiers from 243 Recce Battalion, Badagry successfully cleared the obstruction. Normalcy has since returned to the area. It is entirely false that the victim was turned back when he sought refuge in the police station.

He did not make it off the accident scene, let alone reach the station. Meanwhile, the two herders have been arrested. Investigation is ongoing. Updates will be provided subsequently.”
